Groppenstein gorge is a breath-taking natural gem in the climatic health resort and certified “Schrothkur” town of Obervellach, located right at the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. A 2.5km trail takes you across spectacular climbing paths and bridges, past rapids and waterfalls up to 30m high. Walking time

Approx. 1.5 hours to the end of the gorge (Entrance point Mautturm – exit point “Großer Stein” rest area)

Route characteristics

Approx. 2.5km in length, difference in altitude approx. 230m. Easy to moderately difficult walk across climbing paths and bridges, with short sections leading directly along Mallnitzbach creek in the gorge.
